Level B2 now required for French nationality

Since January 1, 2026, a B2 French level must be demonstrated to apply for French nationality, compared to B1 previously. This increase stems from law n° 2024-42 of January 26, 2024 and its implementing decree n° 2025-648 of July 15, 2025.

A different level depending on the process

Since this reform, each residence status now has its own language threshold:
  • Multi-year residence permit: level A2.
  • Resident card (10 years): level B1.
  • Naturalization, reintegration, declaration by marriage: level B2.

  • The B2 level applies to both written and oral skills, across all four competencies (comprehension and expression).

    What proof is accepted?

Several types of evidence can validate this B2 level:
  • A French diploma: national brevet, or an RNCP diploma of at least level 3.
  • A French as a foreign language diploma: DELF B2 or DALF (C1/C2).
  • A recognized language test: TCF or TEF, with a result less than two years old.

  • Note: since October 1, 2025, comparability certificates issued by Enic-Naric are no longer accepted. A foreign diploma obtained in French, even in a French-speaking country, therefore no longer automatically exempts you from the language test.

A tightening that also applies to ongoing applications

The new rules apply not only to applications filed after January 1, 2026, but also to any incomplete application filed before that date: a B1 proof already provided is no longer sufficient; a new B2 proof must be submitted.
