Nonetheless, many of my fellow countrymen and women still feel like second-class citizens within the Union. This is because they cannot legally take up work in it.

Yet when I speak with people there, I get exactly the opposite impression, namely that they are saying, 'Even if we change nothing, we will still join because they want to have us there so badly'.
Ce sont pourtant des droits existant généralement déjà dans l'Union parce qu'ils sont prévus çà et là dans les Traités, dans la Convention européenne des droits de l'homme, dans les traditions institutionnelles communes des États membres, dans les conventions internationales signées par tous.
And yet most of these rights already exist in the European Union as they are present in the Treaties, in the European Convention on Human Rights, in the institutional traditions common to the Member States and in the international conventions to which they all subscribe.
